Since discovery of the contact lenses in the 1940's, this method of correcting refractive errors has advanced both in technology and popularity. At this stage, a wide range of contact lenses are available at the Eye Medical Clinic. While soft lenses, especially the disposable variety, are most popular because of wearing ease, a variety of hard contact lenses are presented. Special fittings for abnormal corneas are done routinely, and colored cosmetic lenses are also popular. Great care is taken to encourage good hygiene and safety, and regular follow-up, both with the technician and ophthalmologist, is required. The fitting of the farsighted, older population with regular or "bifocal" contact lenses represents a major recent change.
