Our Doctors specialize in Retinal Detachment services
When a hole or tear forms in the retina, fluid can get under this nerve layer and can lift if off the back of the eyeball. Retinal function of the elevated or "detached" retina is compromised which will be permanent unless the retina is reattached, usually with surgery. Even if the retinal surgery is successful, permanent loss of vision in the detached area can be permanent. Symptoms such as light flashes in the periphery and new "floaters" (things "floating" in the line of sight) can signal a retinal problem; a "curtain" over part of the field of vision always is serious. All should prompt a retinal examination by an ophthalmologist (widely dilated pupil) so that any tears, holes or subretinal fluid can be appropriately treated with laser, cryotherapy (spot freeze treatment) or surgery.
